Census-2011 in Uttar Dinajpur district

The 1st census was held in undivided India in the year 1872. Since then this year 2011, this census is the 15th decennial continuous and uninterrupted Indian Census and considered to be the single largest and complex administrative exercise in the world. The population census is conducted as a statutory obligation and Census Act-1948 provides for census enumeration framing for the welfare and development policies for billion plus human resources living in this country.
The census is not a mere head count, it is the biggest data source of the country of its wonderful diversity of people and culture. It contains the information on demography, economy, social and cultural characteristics, fertility, mortality, caste, tribe, language, religion, migration, education, health, employment ageing housing, household amenities urbananization, and infrastructure and so on.
The census of India conducted in two phases. The first phase for houselisting and house numbering and the second phase is the population enumeration. The census moment is the 00.00 hours of 1st March, the referral time at which the snapshot of the population of the country is taken.
In the district of Uttar Dinajpur, the census in the year 2001 was the 1st as well as millennium census and this year this is the second census.
The 1st phase of census was conducted for the period from 1st April to 15th May-2011. Moreover, this year, the Government of India decided to create a National Population Register (NPR) for the entire country to create a comprehensive identity database. The preparation of NPR have two phases, 1st the collection of personal details of all residents of the country and the phase two is the capture of photograph and finger prints of the residents who attains 15 year of age.
